The rise of Andre Blake

Published on 9th January 2018 by

The beginning of Andre Blakes career was big. Selected as the number one overall pick by the Philadelphia Union in 2014 MLS draft, there was naturally high expectations surrounding him but when the Union signed Rais M’Bolhi, he was sent to the bench. After M’Bolhi struggled, it was Blake’s time.

In one of his first starts, he set the Union franchise record for total saves in a game. This all came after Blake suffered an ACL tear in his knee. People thought he would not come back the same, but the doubters were wrong. Blake went on to become the starting goalkeeper for the Union, after M’Bolhi left.

In 2016, he won goalkeeper of the year and an All-Star spot. The next season, he came back to challenge for goalkeeper of the year once again, but lost to Tim Melia of Sporting Kansas City.

Has Andre Blake has interest from European teams?

In the offseason, he was reportedly offered contracts with teams in the the top tier of England. He was not able to finalise the move due to FIFA rules regarding work permits because Jamaica was outside of the top 50 in the world. Union fans were definitely happy about that one.

Blake is once again set to have an amazing season manning the Union goal. There is never any doubt about him losing his spot to John McCarthy, although he is not a bad goalkeeper either. The Union’s front Office, Union fans, Union players, and Andre Blake himself, can be confident in his performances between the sticks, and be confident he has a place in this team. Will he eventually get a move to a top European team?
